Membership
To be a full professional member, applicants must satisfy educational standards and professional practice criteria in relation to experience and practice setting. Prospective members applying for full Naturopathic membership must meet strict criteria in order to receive a Provider Number from the Private Health Funds.
Applicants must be educated in the following four disciplines for Naturopathic Membership of the Association:
- Knowledge of the Body - anatomy, physiology, bio-chemistry, pathology etc.
- Ingestive Modalities - using herbs, minerals and other natural substances as therapeutics.
- Manipulative Therapies - manipulative means using the hands (manos) e.g. massage, acupuncture, remedial therapies.
- Nutrition - Dietetics and nutrition.
NPA Membership
Continued Membership of the Association entails six principal requirements:
- Yearly re-enrolment with payment of annual membership fee.
- Satisfactory points completion of the CNE program.
- Abiding by the NPA Constitutional requirements and the Code of Ethics.
- No criminal record.
- Current First Aid Certificate (compulsory).
- Public Liability Insurance (oamps).
The member who fulfils the above requirements each year is entitled to continue membership unimpeded and with the full support of the Association.
A Membership Update Form is usually sent each year so that relevant changes to the member’s professional or personal details may be communicated to the Association. Nevertheless, members shall within fourteen days advice the Secretary of any changes in name, address, and phone /fax numbers or other details necessary for efficient communication with members.
An association is a group of individuals who see the benefits of being associated with like-minded people. In so doing, members may share information, knowledge and skills which may raise the collective standard of the association (or profession). The association also provides certain protection to its members.
Benefits of Membership
Professional membership of the Association attracts a number of valuable benefits and advantages, including:
- Accreditation and vetting of qualifications by a peer group-Accreditation Board.
- Provider Number from participating Private Health Funds for patients’ consultation rebates (only for Full Naturopathic members).
- National GST registration through Federation of Natural and Traditional Therapists (FNTT).
- Annual Membership Certificate.
- Annual Therapeutic Goods Act Certificate of Exemption from Advertising Restrictions. Required in order to receive information and practitioner-only medicines.
- Facilitation of Public Liability Insurance. Most companies do not insure practitioners who are not members of a professional association.
- Full voting rights in the Association (professional members only).
- Opportunity to be involved in the Executive Committee as committee members.
- National representation to government and other relevant bodies on behalf of its members.
- National acceptance and coverage, especially where the member may decide to move interstate.
- Continuing Naturopathic Education (CNE) programs for skills upgrades.
- Attendance to Association meetings and important functions.
Student members or Associate members are not eligible to vote or to receive benefits of professional membership, however, student membership facilitates straightforward accreditation once the student has graduated.
